Damn Acacia

Kate Kaye tells the story better than I can. In her Media Post column today, she delivers more bad news about this company of pirates. They've bought a patent pertaining to Wi-Fi and intend to pursue licensing 'agreements" with companies "abusing" the patent.

Bad enough they've thrown a bucket of cold water on the streaming media industry with their DMT patent. Now this. The US Patent Office needs to get its head out of the ozone.

Our New Page

I'm very excited! We just put up our new web page pertaining to Flash video, and I hope you'll stop by and take a look.

We've been working with Flash video a lot lately and think it's a great format for clips running around 3 minutes or so. (Any longer than that can cause synchronization problems.) According to Macromedia, the Flash player is on 93% of all computers so playability becomes a "non issue."

We'll keep adding demos as we do more work in Flash, so check back!

Microsoft Sells Slate

I don't know why anyone is surprised at this.

Microsoft has been expressing interest in the TV/media business for a long time - look at their involvement with MSNBC. Microsoft wants to be part of the "one machine does everything" crowd, and keeping a business like Slate only diffuses their focus.

There's a lot more potential revenue in Internet multimedia than in publishing an online magazine.

Acacia Goes to Court

A Markman Order was entered yesterday in the lawsuit involving Acacia and the adult sites who are defendants in Acacia's patent infringement suit.

Time to get out the heavy artillery and prove to the courts that Acacia's patent is far too broad to be enforced. 151 companies have already agreed to licensing terms with Acacia. These folks will be stuck with these agreements if the patent is invalidated as they voluntarily signed them. Hopefully, this order and court hearings will keep others from making the same mistake.

Acacia's shares plunged 38 percent after the news.

The Creative

I keep saying "it's all about the creative." So does Sean Carton in his ClickZ column today.

I guess working online doesn't have the prestige of television. As this medium continues to grow, however, more and more advertising will be directed to it. Users will expect television quality advetising - and advertisers better be prepared to provide it - or online commerce will falter. Marketers need to be thinking about that now.

Summer Blahs

It's been pretty quiet in the streaming world. Other than Acacia, which keeps taking money from people for licensing its "technology," things seem to be on summer hiatus.

Technology keeps outpacing creativity, in my opinion. That's where the next "hue and cry" will erupt. I can feel it coming, and it's long overdue.

So forgive me if entries aren't made as frequently during these summer months. I promise you I'll pass along anything worth noting.
