Streams or Banners?

Great article today in iMedia Connection by Ari Paparo of DoubleClick. It's nice to see an intelligent discussion of in-stream versus banner ads when it comes to video.

In-stream and banners are two ways to execute a campaign. They're not interchangeable, and they serve different purposes.

Learning to effectively use video on the internet is a worthwhile venture. Again, it's NOT television. Yes, clutter is a problem, but let's learn the lessons that TV advertisers obviously haven't. Let's not ruin this incredibly diverse medium.

Rich Media Standards

Why is it the devil's always in the details?

Chris Young, CEO of Klipmart. laments about the lack of delivery standards for video in today's issue of Rich Media Insider.

This isn't a new topic or one that hasn't been beaten to death before.

The internet still isn't television - a topic discussed in this blog many times. In many ways, the internet is still the Wild West with lots of players jockeying for position - especially in the burgeoning field of internet video. (Heck, we can't even get browser standards to which everyone can or will adhere!)

Will this change? I can't honestly predict this.

Flash had emerged as the format of "choice" for the majority of internet advertisers. However, it still has its limitations, and I don't believe Microsoft will be ready to abandon Windows Media anytime soon. (Not to speak of Real Networks and Apple.)

Stick around - this could make the browser wars look tame by comparison.

The Adobe Macromedia Merger

This week's buzz surrounds the merger of Adobe and Macromedia. What can we users expect?

Will Director - that difficult to learn and very expensive piece of software - be phased out? Will Go Live and Dreamweaver be integrated? Will Flash's applications be extensively upgraded? Will the PDF format be expanded and made easier to use?

These questions are on everyone's mind and will have a definite impact on the multimedia landscape.

Need for New Creative

The article today in ClickZ by Dorian Sweet says it all.

Unless video specifically designed for the internet starts appearing, surfers will react to internet video the same way they do to TV - they'll start tuning it out. And it won't take too long.

The Need for Streams

Rich Media Insider today reports on two different studies on the streaming habits of internet users.

Both Arbitron/Edison Media and Pew Internet serve stats on the significance of streaming media to the three most desireable marketing segments: males, youth, and the affluent.

Take a look at the article, peruse the reports, and then start your streaming!

The Bastardization of Flash

Macromedia has already published info on their site on how to "disable shared objects." And they're more than a little annoyed at United Virtualities for creating a PIE to replace the cookie.

I don't blame Macromedia one bit. Bastardizing a technology like Flash to do a job for which it wasn't created isn't exactly a nice way to express gratitude. And every ad creator and server does owe Macromedia bit of gratitude.

This "cookie" problem has been THE hot topic this past couple of weeks. No doubt someone will come up with a solution that doesn't hurt a company that's given the industry so much reach and consumer acceptance.
